Blue Mitchell: Big 6
(Riverside, 1958)
Blue Mitchell's first album as a leader, recorded when he was 28 years old,
featuring Curtis Fuller (trombone), Johnny Griffin (tenor sax), Wynton
Kelly (piano), Wilbur Ware (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums).
Highlights include Benny Golson's "Blues March" (this recording precedes
the more famous Art Blakey version) and a ballad version of "There Will
Never Be Another You".

Horace Silver: Blowin' The Blues Away
(Blue Note, 1959)
A classic hard bop date featuring Mitchell, Horace Silver (piano), Junior
Cook (tenor sax), Gene Taylor (bass), and Louis Hayes (drums). Best
known for the jazz standards "Peace" and "Sister Sadie", this is arguably
one of Silver's strongest sets as a leader.

Blue Mitchell: Blue's Moods

One of the very few recordings of Mitchell in a quartet setting, this is
a fan's favorite that grooves, featuring Wynton Kelly (piano), Sam Jones
(bass), and Roy Brooks (drums). Highlights include Charlie Parker's
"Scrapple From The Apple", "Sweet Pumpkin", and the standard "I Wish
I Knew".

Jackie McLean: Capuchin Swing
(Blue Note, 1960)
A prototypical hard bop recording which touches on some of the free-form
inventions being explored by Ornette Coleman. Featuring McLean (alto
sax), Mitchell (trumpet), Walter Bishop Jr. (piano), Paul Chambers (bass),
and Art Taylor (drums), the set is a mixture of mid- to up-tempo cookers.
Highlights include the McLean originals "Condition Blue" and "Capuchin
Swing" (based on the standard "Star Eyes").
