Clark Terry: Serenade to a Bus Seat
(Riverside, 1957)
A swinging bop session featuring Terry (trumpet), Johnny Griffin (tenor sax), Wynton Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums). Terry wrote five of the eight selections presented. The combination of Terry and Griffin gives the set a hard edge, while the rhythm section (borrowed from Miles Davis's quintet) swings solidly behind. This is one of the last recordings before Terry added the flughorn to his arsenal.

Donna Lee (Parker) / Boardwalk (Terry) / Boomerang (Terry) / Digits (Terry) / Serenade to a Bus Seat (Terry) / Stardust (Carmichael/Parish) / Cruising (Terry) / That Old Black Magic (Arlen/Mercer)

Clark Terry: In Orbit
(Riverside, 1957)
An essential recording featuring Thelonious Monk in a rare appearance as sideman.

In Orbit / One Foot In The Gutter / Trust In Me / Let's Cool One / Pea-Eye / Argentia / Moonlight Fiesta / buck's Business / Very Near Blue / Flugelin' The Blues

Clark Terry's solo on "One Foot in the Gutter" (PDF/64KB)

Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band: Live at the Village Vanguard
(Verve, 1960)
An historic recording featuring Mulligan's band with its strongest stable of soloists, this limited edition CD release is another classic which should be in every collection. Mulligan (bari sax/piano), Terry (trumpet), and Bob Brookmeyer (valve trombone) are featured on excellent arrangements by Mulligan, Brookmeyer, Al Cohn, and Johnny Mandel. Terry's trading with Mulligan on Art Farmer's "Blueport" is a tour de force (a hilarious battle of quotes ensues, and you can hear the band breaking into laughter at one point). Mel Lewis provides a clinic on big band drumming. Not to be missed.

Blueport / Body and Soul / Black Nightgown / Come Rain or Come Shine / Lady Chatterley's Mother / Let My People Be

Clark Terry's solo on "Blueport" (PDF/177KB)

Oscar Peterson: Oscar Peterson Trio Plus One
(Mercury, 1964)
A classic that should be in every jazz afficianado's collection, this set features Oscar Peterson (piano), Ray Brown (bass), and Ed Thigpen (drums), with Clark Terry (trumpet/flugelhorn). While this contains the first recorded version of Terry's hallmark "mumbles" routine, it is more notable for Terry's flawless execution on his solos. Terry is in peak form on this recording!

Brotherhood of Man / Jim / Blues for Smedley / Roundalay / Mumbles / Mack the Knife / They Didn't Believe Me / Squeaky's Blues / I Want a Little Girl / Incoherent Blues

Clark Terry/Bob Broomeyer: The Power of Positive Swinging
(Mainstream, 1964)
Terry and Bob Brookmeyer's quintet, featuring Terry (trumpet/flugelhorn), Brookmeyer (valve trombone), Roger Kellaway (piano) Bill Crow (bass), and Dave Bailey (drums) (all but Kellaway played with Gerry Mulligan at one point). Swinging arrangements, a hint of humor here and there, with Terry in prime form.

Dancing on the Grave / Battle Hymn of the Republic / The King / Ode to a Flugelhorn / Gal in Calico / Green Stamps / Hawg Jawz / Simple Waltz / Just an Old Manuscript

Clark Terry's solo on "Gal In Calico" (PDF/71Kb)

Clark Terry/Bob Broomeyer: Gingerbread Men
(Mainstream, 1966)
Terry and Bob Brookmeyer's quintet, featuring Terry (trumpet/flugelhorn/vocals), Brookmeyer (valve trombone), Hank Jones (piano) Bob Cranshaw (bass), and Dave Bailey (drums). Sadly, this has not been reissued on CD as of this writing.

Clark Terry: Portraits
(Chesky, 1988)
This fine set, featuring Terry (trumpet/flugelhorn), Don Friedman (piano), Victor Gaskin (bass), and Lewis Nash (drums), finds Terry paying tribute to various jazz trumpeters. Notable in that the pieces he selects are not part of his regular repetoire, and as such are fairly fresh treatments; Terry's "Finger Filibuster" is the lone original from the leader in the set.

Pennies from Heaven (Burke/Johnston) Sugar Blues (Williams) Autumn Leaves (Kosma/Mercer/Prevert) Finger Filibuster (Terry) Little Jazz (Eldridge) When It's Sleepy Time Down South (Muse/Rene/Rene) Jive at Five (Basie/Edison) Ciribiribin (Pestalozza/Traditional) Ow! (Gillespie) I Can't Get Started (Duke/Gershwin) I Don't Wanna Be Kissed (Elliott/Spina)

Clark Terry's solo on "Jive at Five" (PDF/36Kb)

Joe Williams: That Holiday Feelin'
(Polygram, 1990)
A swinging set of Christmas numbers featuring Joe Williams (vocals) with Clark Terry providing some cameo solos.

Christmas Rainbows / Winter Wonderland / Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas / What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? / Kissing by the Mistletoe / Silent Night / Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! / Silver Bells / Christmas Waltz / Christmas Song / Child Is Born
