How to set up OpenTransport / PPP with
Shouting Ground Technologies
OpenTransport should be included with your Macintosh OS, if the version is
recent enough. You will need to have OpenTransport installed to use these instructions.
If you don't have it, you can
download a copy
at Apple's Web Site. You'll need the "net-install" for both OpenTransport, and OT/PPP.
Compatability
Make sure your version of OpenTransport is 1.1.1 or greater. (This can be found by opening TCP/IP from the Control Panels, and clicking the Info button.)
TCP Setup
Below you will find a picture of what the final result should look like (in most cases):
PPP Setup
From this point, you can start up any network application requiring TCP/IP (Internet) services. Netscape, Internet Explorer, telnet, FTP, IRC, archie, CUSeeMe are all at your fingertips. Many latest versions of software can be found via anonymous FTP at ftp.shout.net.
OT/PPP acts as a "Dial-on demand" program. This means that you can start up a Web browser or other such application even if you haven't established the PPP connection yet. A web browser's attempt to access TCP/IP will wake up OT/PPP. OT/PPP with then
automatically establish a connection to the Internet through Shouting Ground.
When you are done with network applications, it is important to free up the phone-line for other subscribers. Open the PPP control panel and click on the "Disconnect" button.
If you have connection problems
Try connecting manually. To do this, do the following:
If you have errors like "DNS Failure. Couldn't resolve www.whatever.com."
- Open the TCP/IP control panel, and confirm that the Domain Name Server Information is set up as mentioned above.
