Gender equity, minority hires on agenda for Diversity Committee

By Camille Monahan

The Diversity Committee of the Association of Academic Professionals is interested in a variety of issues related to improving our work experience through a commitment to diversity. We are interested in issues related to age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and others, and will (1) learn about UIUC policies and structures dealing with these issues, (2) learn about diversity issues as they affect academic professionals, (3) identify resources within the IEA/NEA that can help the AAP promote diversity, (4) propose a diversity statement for adoption by the AAP, and (5) propose diversity goals for UIUC.

The committee is investigating programs to improve the number of academic professional minority hires, and we are investigating the possibility of a gender-based wage gap. Considering the poor rate of African American hires (excluding the faculty, academic professionals have the lowest rate of African American hires on campus) and preliminary salary data which suggest that academic professional women's salaries are 84% of men's, there is much work to be done. We welcome anyone interested in these or other diversity issues to attend our monthly meetings. We meet on the second Wednesday of each month at 11:30 at the Bread Company on Goodwin Avenue in Urbana. Our next meeting will be Wednesday May 12.
