-- Charles Fort, in The Book
Of The Damned (1919), catalogued unusual events he had culled
from laborious scrutiny of various newspaper accounts. (Fort's other
books dealing with more such unusual phenomena are, New Lands, Lo!, and Wild Talents.)
This is the Charles Fort who mercilessly ridiculed so-called
"science." Theorizing about dominant "reality," Fort called it "the New
Dominant." He wrote that the "formulated utterances that were regarded
as final truths in a past generation, are now seen to be
insufficiencies." These various "Dominants," zeitgeists of various eras
(see, e.g., "Newton's Zeitgeist," http://www.shout.net/~bigred/Zeitgeist.html),
were enslavements. (chapter 18, Book of the Damned)
"Dominants ["realities"], in their succession, displace preceding
Dominants" when the old "realities" wear out.
Something strange to consider is that Fortean Times magazine, supposedly
representing the Fortean view, actually supports the current Dominant
-- which is a far cry from what Fort himself used to do!
In The Book of the Damned,
Fort in part wrote about strange rains of frogs coming from the sky.
What caused these odd deluges? "Well, it was a whirlwind which sucked
up the frogs then they later rained down," was the "scientific"
explanation. Fort sneered, "Was there some especially froggy place, the
'center of frogeity,' from which all frogs falling from the sky come
from? Why only frogs in the deluge?" And, "There is not one report
findable about a fall of tadpoles from the sky." (chapter 7, Book of the Damned)
This past week there was a rain of frogs, in Serbia. The cause? Must
have been a "whirlwind."
Two years ago, this editor, out walking, was swarmed upon by two
angry birds. Flailing his arms, he scurried hurriedly down the street.
To persons driving by, the venerable Conspiracy
Nation editor possibly appeared to be a lunatic. Dutifully, this
editor informed the local newspaper about the curious incident, and the
local newspaper undutifully ignored his report.
Now, within the past few months, there have been several reports
dealing with an increase of birds attacking humans. On June 10th of
this year, the Christian Science
Monitor headlined "a rise in
bird attacks." ("Close encounters of the fluttering kind: a rise
in bird attacks," by Patrik Jonsson) US Postal carrier Keith Cooper
"wasn't divebombed just once, but three times in three different parts
of [Raleigh, North Carolina]."
Adds the Christian Science Monitor:
"For some inexplicable reason, from Houston to Washington, it's been
the year of aggressive mockingbirds, crows, hawks, and even
woodpeckers."
In the United Kingdom, postman Jeffrey Patton battles almost daily
with an angry pheasant. ("Postman copes with bird attacks," BBC News,
3/5/04)
In Houston, "large black grackles are swooping down on downtown
Houston and attacking people's heads, hair and backs." ("Bird attacks
in Houston puzzle victims," AP, 5/19/05)
In London, there is a "Warning over crow attacks." (This Is London, 6/10/05. By Luke
David and Katharine Barney, of the Evening Standard) An attack by two
crows "left a man bloodied and needing hospital treatment... Joggers
are now being warned to be extra vigilant."
In ancient times, these bird rampages would have been considered to
be an omen of some type. Some cultures, notes Patrik Jonnson (CSM, op.
cit.), consider birds to be "harbingers -- often of doom."
But that was the old Dominant. The new Dominant boils down to a
territorial dispute between birds and humans. With suburban sprawl,
bird culture and human culture are coming into increasing conflict,
supposedly.
The newest paradigm, offered by Conspiracy
Nation, is that increasing electromagnetic pollution is
afflicting the brains of some birds, driving them haywire.
For you Christians out there, this is yet another sign of the "end times."
God had given man "dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl
of the air" (Genesis 1:26). Now, obviously God has nullified the
dominion, since these fowls of the air attack humans. What can this
mean except God has withdrawn his favor?
