Strange Case Of Chris Dodd
(Conspiracy Nation, 09/03/07) – On August 31st of this year Conspiracy Nation reported upon a claim made by the late Sherman H. Skolnick in 1999, that Senator Chris Dodd is the unacknowledged grandson of Joseph Stalin, the Soviet Dictator. (“Dodd: Grandson Of Stalin?” http://www.shout.net/~bigred/Dodd.html)
Unfortunately, Mr. Skolnick passed away in May of 2006, so this editor is unable to double-check with him on this. However searching the Internet on the subject “Dodd Stalin Grandson” yielded at least one web site whose author was also fascinated by Skolnick's claim.
At http://www.classicalvalues.com/archives/003504.html the writer reproduces photographic comparisons (scroll down at site) of Dodd and Stalin and speculates on similarities of features. “Is there any way to confirm the story?” wonders the writer. Dodd could of course confirm or deny a Stalin ancestor, but where would that leave us? Perhaps Dodd is “deep cover.” The writer notes “a general similarity in hairlines, shape of nose and earlobes” but remains unconvinced.
Preliminary Dodd research shows a Martha Dodd listed in connection with the Venona Files. Her name is not listed in the Venona documents themselves, but is inferred by correlation with codenames and/or similarly spelled names in the documents. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Americans_in_the_Venona_papers) The Venona Papers were originally declassified by Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan. They are decrypted Soviet intelligence transmissions.
Martha Eccles Dodd (1908-1990) operated under the Soviet code name LIZA, according to the Wikipedia reference. She was the daughter of William Dodd, U.S. ambassador to Germany between 1933 and 1937. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martha_Dodd)
But Chris Dodd at this point is not obviously connected with either Martha Dodd or William Dodd. His father, Thomas Joseph Dodd (May 15, 1907 – May 24, 1971) was a United States Senator and Representative from Connecticut. Thomas Dodd, according to a possible cover story or “legend,” was born in Norwich, New London County to Abigail Margaret O'Sullivan and Thomas Joseph Dodd.
The concept of a “legend,” in spycraft an alias or false identity for a spy, is the centerpiece of a novel by John Le Carré, Smiley's People. In that tale we have an “illegitimate” daughter of a top Soviet intelligence chief given a false identity in the free world. Did something similar happen in the strange case of Chris Dodd? Could Thomas Dodd have been secretly a bastard child of Joseph Stalin, smuggled into the West and assuming a false identity? One blogger has suggested on this general subject, “Only one?” Stalin likely sired several “illegitimate” children. “When people like that have illegitimate kids,” he writes, “it's neither a surprise nor a big deal.” This brings in shades of “The Boys From Brazil,” except it is not Hitler in this case being replicated, but Joseph Stalin.
With due respect to the late Sherman H. Skolnick, Conspiracy Nation nonetheless assigns a low probability to his claim that Senator Chris Dodd is a secret grandson of Joseph Stalin. In 1907 Stalin was not yet Soviet dictator and lacked power to create a “legend” for Thomas Dodd. This, though, does not necessarily mean Skolnick was wrong about Dodd. In the past, this editor has doubted some of Skolnick's claims, only to later be astonished by their accuracy.
