-- Too gauche to say would be "recent hurricanes are God's punishment
for America's tolerance of Bush The
Blasphemer." Bush has anthropomorphized the deity, would be the
argument. He has vulgarized sublime concepts and intimated his personal
exaltation in the eyes of the Creator. Because America has tacitly
accepted this, it is chastisement time.
It would be too tacky to suggest such a thing, even for Conspiracy Nation.
Others are not so refined. Some Christian leaders wasted no time,
following the heartbreak of Sept. 11, 2001 (9/11), in promoting their
own views while most Americans were in shock. "It is God's punishment
for the homosexuals," they cried.
Of course, politicians, especially Blasphemer
Bush, used 9/11 to their advantage. "There is a Big Enemy and we all must unite
(stop asking questions)!"
Retail outlets also wasted no time. Patriotic muzak was pumped into
department store ambience. "9/11: We will never forget," proudly
proclaimed well-dressed leaders of the sales force. The Oct. 15, 2001
issue of Time magazine
included an amazing pro-shopping appeal. "The Greatest Generation got
to save old tires, dig a Victory Garden
and forgo sugar. The Richest Generation is being asked to shop," wrote
the author. (See "Please, Please, Go Shopping," http://www.shout.net/~bigred/Shopping.htm)
Hopping onto the repentance bandwagon are some environmentalists.
"It is God's punishment for our sins against Nature. Repent your ways!"
Not exactly taking advantage of the situation are some conspiracy
theorists. They are passionate about the Truth. They congregate into
like-minded associations, and defend beliefs under attack from "Them." This is justifiable, except
there can begin to form a "Church Of
The Conspiracy," as admirably portrayed in the "Puzzling
Evidence" segment of the film, "True Stories." There begins to be
talk: "George W. Bush -- the real Dubya Bush -- was in the Fortress of
Solitude, at the controls of the Hurricane Underlying Guidance System,
or HUGS, for short," it is whispered. (See "New Orleans: The Truth," http://www.shout.net/~bigred/NOTruth.html)
Also weighing in are the Hopi Elders. "All the signs are in place! It is the Great Spirit's punishment for America's sins against native Americans!" (See "Oh No! More Hopi Elders!" http://www.shout.net/~bigred/HopiGroaners.html)
A shrewd businessman wanting to sell his "Future Map Of America,"
Gordon-Michael Scallion, does not sit idly by. ""I stated that this
year would be dominated by the element water... I had a vision where I
saw New Orleans underwater..." (Buy my map before it's too late.)
But maybe it's just a bad hurricane season. These things happen.
