(Conspiracy Nation, 8/28/04) -- Since September 11, 2001,
when the Bush Republicans wrapped themselves in the American flag, it seems
nothing is too infamous for them. Okay, they usurped the flag. A tough blow for those who love their
country yet, from knowledge of history, tend to question authority. The
U.S. flag is an ideal, so the Bush-Republican hogging of the material manifestation
can be shrugged off. Okay, they usurped Jesus Christ. A pathetic transformation of the
Divinity from the God of Love into a creature filled with hate. Sensitive
persons find this gross anthropomorphism sickening, but appeal in their
souls to the ineffable, eternal Source of Good. But this time they have gone too far. According to the BBC News
and other sources, there is to be "a planned tribute to late country star
Johnny Cash at next week's Republican convention in New York." |
Johnny Cash was the quintessential American: encountering failure yet
never giving up; struggling with inner demons yet keeping the faith; himself
hurting inside, yet caring more about the hurts of others. And this shining
example of American manhood is about to be summarily expropriated by callous
politicians of the Republican Party.
Have they, at last, no shame? Is there nothing pure with which they will
not by association taint, drag down into the mud, by connection with themselves?
This is the man who sang, during the height of the Vietnam controversy,
"The lonely voice of youth asks, 'What is truth?'"
And it didn't really matter if the Truth was there,
it was the cut of his clothes and the length of his hair.
This is the man who sang, "The man in black."
Well we're doing mighty fine I do suppose,
in our streak-of-lightning cars and fancy clothes.
But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back,
up front there ought to be a man in black.
Only a year since Johnny Cash's death, and the Republicans have outpaced
even slimey corporations which would not dare, at this point, to steal the
beloved memory of this man. Have they, at last, no shame? Is there no low
to which the Bush Republicans will not sink?
