-- Positivists, following a circumscribed approach to science, have
decided the universe began with a "big bang." To them, "God" is like a
billiard player doing a break shot. Theirs is a conception necessarily
limited to matter. What the positivists do not realize is how their own
individual birth trauma pervades their thinking. Otto Rank (image, left) was accused by Sigmund Freud of
"anti-Oedipal" heresy. In 1924 Rank published The Trauma of Birth,
exploring how art, myth, religion, philosophy and therapy were
illuminated by separation anxiety in the “phase before the development
of the Oedipus complex.” ("Otto Rank," Wikipedia reference, Jan. 29,
2007) Rank's book is difficult to obtain nowadays. This editor
managed to find a fading copy in the "stacks" at a local university,
fifteen years ago. Relying upon memory, Conspiracy Nation summarizes the
birth trauma concept. We are walloped into existence at birth. Whack! "Welcome to
the world!" says the doctor. From the warm, fuzzy womb we, at birth,
experience an individual "big bang." Rank stresses the tremendous
trauma most of us experienced and how it affects our subsequent lives. |
One aspect of the effect of the trauma of birth is to equate bombs
with birth. There are problems in the Middle East. Both sides often
favor bombs as the best solution. Extremist Muslims believe by blowing
themselves up in suicide attacks, they will be "born" into paradise. In
response to the nagging problem, Israel, in July 2006, decided to
cluster bomb Lebanon. Condoleeza Rice, U.S. Secretary of State,
described it as the "birth pangs" of the New Middle East. The problems
continue. "What is needed is a really big bomb, some tactical nuclear
devices," decide some strangelovian characters. But all this is just a
re-living of the primal trauma of birth. And it is mistaken. Bombs do
not solve the problem; big bangs do not give birth.
Proponents of the "Big Bang" idea for the beginning of the universe
rely upon mathematics. Yet "common mathematics is but a deceitful
phantasmagoria, whose much-praised infallibility only arises from this
-- that materials, conditions, and references are made its foundation."
[1] Matter defines the math. The math, so far as it goes, is correct,
but is artificially circumscribed by the positivists. Positivist
science, limited by definition to matter, is a tautology, condemned to
forever wander in circles.
Also, the various mathematical formulae represent a hidden desire to
play with the feces.
The actual "beginning" of the universe lies outside of so-called
"time." The universe is eternal, from the Latin aeternus, outside the three,
outside length, width, and depth. To speak of a "beginning" for the
universe is, in a sense, ridiculous. The way it "began" is analogous to
steam condensing to water, then freezing into ice. The origin of the
universe will never be found in matter; it originated "elsewhere."
The strait-jacket of so-called science is at a dead-end. "[T]he
materialism of To-Day is born of the brutal Yesterday. It is the
bastard progeny of the French Revolution and its reaction against ages
of religious bigotry and repression." [1]
An intuitive clue to how the universe began is found in T.S. Eliots
poem, "Choruses From 'The Rock'":
"Then came, at a predetermined
moment, a moment in time and of time,
A moment not out of time, but in time, in what we call history:
transecting, bisecting the world of time,
a moment in time but not like a moment of time,
A moment in time but time was made through that moment:
for without the meaning there is no time, and that moment of time gave
the meaning."
"Time is forever just running out," paradoxically states Richard
Hofstadter, in his essay, "The Paranoid Style In American Politics."
Yet "time" is illusory, a succession of states of consciousness
misinterpreted as "time." [2] Various mental states occur, which are
projected upon the outside world. Yesterday, the mental state was
anti-war demonstrations. Next week, the mental state will be "Super
Bowl." All these are changes in consciousness, not changes in "time."
