Revolt Against The Modern World
(Conspiracy Nation, 02/29/08) – A “unified field theory” explaining various distortions is offered by controversial author Julius Evola (1898 – 1974). Why does the Establishment persist in denying former civilizations such as the Atlantean and the Lemurian? Why is Darwin's theory of evolution sacrosanct? What is behind the rise of so-called “Feminism”? In Revolt Against The Modern World (Rochester, VT: Inner Traditions, 1995), a “big picture” involving a time-frame of 25,000 years offers an explanation.
Even “time” itself is subjected to scrutiny. Our modern notion of “time” differs from older, traditional outlooks. The relatively recent Judeo-Christian view is a straight line having two end-points: creation and judgment day. The more ancient perspective was cyclical, involving the rise and fall of previous civilizations greater in many ways than our own “modern” civilization. “Cause and effect,” related to a linear idea of time, contrasts with an earlier concept of events originating not in the phenomenal world but in the “invisible dimension.” Long ago, “time was not regarded quantitatively but rather qualitatively; not as a series, but as a rhythm.” Eternity is divided into “great years” (Yugas) in which the same events keep recurring. Time is not connected with phenomena but with meaning. Various times can be favorable or unfavorable, auspicious or inauspicious. In the ancient, qualitative view of “time”, every hour has its sacred aspect.
In light of the cyclical perspective, as opposed to the linear perspective, “savage tribes should not be considered as precivilized states of mankind,” writes Evola, “but rather as extremely degenerated forms of remnants of very ancient races and civilizations.” When our own “modern” civilization collapses, a “gap” is likely to occur based on former patterns. This means a triumphant “New World Order” will not appear in 2012, the end of the Kali-Yuga, but instead a degeneration and reversion to savagery. We will become the new “savage tribes,” unless people somehow wake up to the true situation.
Evola's prediction on the likelihood of the mass of people (“the demos”) reversing their own decay is negative. Witness, for example, the increasing sports mania. There is “a senseless delirium of sporting events, which are based on a plebeian and materialistic cult of action. These frenzies represent the phenomena of the incursion of the collective and the regression into the collective.” War is seen as a sports event: we must, “support the team.” John F. Kennedy's wish to promote physical education in the 1960s has become action by voyeurism, where we watch others exercise for us on television.
The Sun has primacy over the Moon in that the Moon casts no light of its own. As civilizations decline, however, solar worship is replaced by lunar worship. This is manifested through the advent of the “civilization of the Mother.” The “supremacist fancies of a gynaecocratic civilization” are “marked by an antiheroic subordination of the son to the mother and by an emphasis on the mother's privileges.” Stories of “virgin births” signify the fantasy of men not being necessary. Where is Joseph? He is “not important.”
The decline of masculinity (not a macho pose, but more of a spiritual virility) meant “it was only a matter of time before women rose up” and a gynaeococracy began to entrench itself. Nonetheless, so-called “Feminism” has been unable to devise a personality for women other than by imitating the male personality. Female judges are notoriously harsh, an attempt to caricature male toughness. What woman judge dares to show a tender, feminine side? Hastening the male decline has been the return of an Aphrodistic cult. The men, enslaved by their senses, are ever more at the service of women. But for the woman, sex is not as interesting “as the narcissistic cult of her body... Eventually, because of the woman's increased egocentrism, men will no longer be of interest to her...” Can babies be born without the involvement of (ugh) men? “Virgin births” again appear. Who needs Joseph?
Evola's “unified field theory” also explains so-called “science,” which he disdainfully calls “scientism.” Loss of connection with the invisible dimension corresponds with a rise in materiality. At its service is the priesthood of “science.” Rationalism, newly enthroned, joined forces with empiricism and experimentalism in the context of scientism. Reality became synonymous with materiality. A “dead knowledge of dead objects led to the sinister art of producing artificial, automatic, and obscurely demonic entities. The advent of rationalism and scientism was unavoidably followed by the advent of technology and machines, which have become the center and apotheosis of the new human world.” These impressive inventions have acted like opium, distracting the masses from keener perception. (“Electricity will replace God.” -- Vladimir Lenin, qtd. in Black Book Of Communism). Instead of overcoming “time” in a spiritual manner, a counterfeit – overcoming “time” by speed – has been the replacement. Communication is instantaneous (“live” media) and the pace of life goes ever faster. “Being and stability are regarded by our contemporaries as akin to death; they cannot live unless they act, fret, or distract themselves with this or that.”
At last it is understood why such ideas as a former Atlantean civilization cannot be tolerated. Acknowledgement of Atlantis would include a cyclical view of history, where a past great civilization had suffered decline and effacement. This would be contrary to the Judeo-Christian straight line view of time, which places our own “modern” civilization at the summit of existence. Darwinian evolution also becomes problematic if the straight-line ascent viewpoint gets tossed. If earlier civilizations have been greater than our own, what does this mean for “the ascent of man”?
As for America, Evola, an Italian, observes what is almost “a theocracy of productivity, which is increasingly aiming at producing things [zombies] rather than people, or people only as more efficient workers...” The products themselves become standardized, as do the retail establishments. This standardization of mechanical and quantitative products “determines and imposes the standardization on those who purchase them; the uniformity of tastes and progressive reduction to a few types corresponds to what is directly manifested in people's minds.”
Evola's outlook is pessimistic. He includes a prophecy from an ancient Hindu text, the Visnu Parana, which eerily describes our own era. Kings of violent temper will seize upon the property of their subjects. Under the pretext of levying customs [taxes], merchants will be robbed. Piety will decrease until the whole world is depraved. Wealth will be the only source of devotion; passion will be the sole bond of union between the sexes; falsehood will be the only means of success in litigation.
But those who inwardly endure during this time “will be greater than the people of old...” Although “the Kali-Yuga is an age of great destructions, those who live during it and manage to remain standing may achieve fruits that were not easily achieved by men [and women] living in other ages.” To “remain standing” does not mean economic achievement here, but just to resist succumbing to collective insanity – not so easy to do when those about you are losing their heads and blaming it on you.
