Strange Shapes Over Saturn

(Conspiracy Nation, 06/11/07) – At left are two images of Saturn, taken by NASA's Cassini mission. The leftmost image is from Saturn's south pole. The nearer image is from Saturn's north pole.

What is seen in the south pole image is an eerie, giant eye. The north pole image shows a huge hexagon. The images bring to mind an odd “face on Mars” which is also puzzling.

The Saturn hexagon appears to have remained fixed with Saturn's rotation rate and axis since first glimpsed by Voyager 26 years ago. It is estimated to be 15,000 miles in diameter. "This is a very strange feature, lying in a precise geometric fashion with six nearly equally straight sides," said Kevin Baines, atmospheric expert and member of Cassini's visual and infrared mapping spectrometer team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. (“Bizarre Hexagon Spotted on Saturn”, http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/070327_saturn_hex.html)

The Saturn eye is estimated to be 5,000 miles wide. "It looks like a hurricane, but it doesn't behave like a hurricane," said Andrew Ingersoll, a member of Cassini's imaging team at the California Institute of Technology. (“Freak One-Eyed Monster Storm Spotted on Saturn”, by Robert Roy Britt. http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/061109_monster_storm.html)

What this means, at this point, is anybody's guess. Conspiracy speculation on the hexagon includes the handiwork of giant alien bees, and masonic black sun worship. "I can’t wait to hear NASA explain this thing," one blogger wrote. "Isn’t there some statement out there that straight lines in nature are impossible? Well, here are six." One commentator noted, “Good thing it wasn't a pentagon, or there would be a lot of freaked-out people.” (“Explanation of hexagonal cloud over Saturn clear to conspiracy theorists”, by Rick Weiss.
