Yelping howls greeted offhand remarks by the Reverend Pat Robertson, when he stated, "Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it," he said on Christian Broadcasting Network's "The 700 Club." "They were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon III, or whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, we will serve you if you'll get us free from the French. True story. And so, the devil said, okay it's a deal." [1]

Michael Hoffman clarifies that Robertson is wrong about who ruled France during the Haitian Revolution. "It began in 1791 and ended in 1804. 'Napoleon III' did not come to power until 1848." But, adds Hoffman, "It seems there was indeed a voodoo pact, however." [2]

Of course, it is common decency that the world will help the people of Haiti at this time, regardless of any voodoo pact. But, for the record, "Bois Caïman (lit. Cayman 1 Woods; Kreyòl: Bwa Kayiman ) is the site of the vodou ceremony presided over by Boukman Dutty and Cecile Fatiman on August 14, 1791. It is widely accepted as the starting point for the Haitian Revolution. Participants at Bois Caïman were also Georges Biassou, Jeannot Bullet and Jean François Papillon, all of which were leaders of the early Haitian Revolution." [2]

So some pseudo-intellectual zombies need to avoid the full moon before they automatically bark at Rev. Robertson.

The word voodoo comes from the word vudu, the Dahomean "spirit", an invisible mysterious force that can intervene in human affairs. The worship of spirits remains a vital part of the practices of voodoo in Louisiana. [3] A disturbing film released in 1987, Angel Heart, depicts private detective Harry Angel (Mickey Rourke) forced to confront the selling of his soul to the Devil. "Angel travels to New Orleans as he digs deeper into the case, delving into a world of voodoo and Satanism and growing increasingly worried for his own safety." [4]

The Haitian earthquake of January 2010 has a coincident timing relative to the Hurricane Katrina battering of Louisiana in 2005: Both came within a year of presidential inaugurations: George W. Bush in 2005, and Barack Obama in January 2009. Both disasters became tests for the respective administrations. Bush is seen to have failed in his response. How the Obama administration will fare remains to be seen.

It had seemed, at first glance, as if some powerful explosive such as PETN must have caused the Haitian "earthquake". [5] Why wasn't the Dominican Republic, part of the same island, especially affected? And, indeed, one writer alleges, "They had the motive and the means to create this earthquake" and alludes to "the steering of Katrina and, yes, the December 2004 Sumatra magnitude 9 earthquake and Indian Ocean Tsunami..." [6]

Already, unfortunately, the tragedy in Haiti is turning into a political football. And if you "think outside the box" about the "earthquake", you will be ostracized. Has the United States been infected with the "voodoo economics"? Papa Legba, come and open the gate:

St. Peter, St Peter, open the door,
I’m callin’ you, come to me!
St. Peter, St Peter, open the door,

Papa Legba, open the gate for me, Ago-e
Ativon Legba, open the gate for me;
The gate for me, papa, so that I may enter the temple
On my way back, I shall thank you for this favor.
