Image: Mary Baker Eddy. Apologies if link has expired.(Melchizedek Communique, MC051409) A possible solution to the health care crisis has been found. Millions of Americans cannot afford health insurance. One method of healing prominent in the 19th century -- Christian Science -- may be the affordable alternative we seek.

Christian Science healing as an alternative to "nothing else available" for increasingly impoverished Americans does not necessarily mean they would have to convert to that religion. The "key ingredient" seems to be existence of non-material realms.

The healing method of Christian Science originates with one Mary Baker Eddy (image shown), who advocated Christian Science as a spiritual practical solution to health and moral issues. [1] Besides dealing with health problems, this indicates government "ethics" programs might also be scrapped, since "moral issues" fall under the Baker Eddy umbrella.

In her uplifting book, Science and Health (With Key to the Scriptures), Mrs. Baker Eddy explains: the basis of Christian Science is "the power of Mind over matter." [2] "Sickness has been combated for centuries by doctors using material remedies," writes Mrs. Baker Eddy, "but the question arises, Is there less sickness because of these practitioners?" [3]

And, in truth, the number of health care workers and their cost has been rising dramatically lately, even though job losses in other areas are great. This invertedly translates as, "More practitioners means more sick people." The more doctors and nurses and pharmaceuticals we have, the larger the suffering customer base seems to be. Maybe it's time for a really different approach to disease.

Mystic and theologian Emmanuel Swedenborg (1688 - 1772) apparently supports the view of Mrs. Baker Eddy. Citing Genesis 50: 2, "And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians," Swedenborg was moved to comment on "the signification of the 'physicians,' as being preservation from evils." This because "in the spiritual world diseases are evils and falsities, spiritual diseases being nothing else; for evils and falsities take away health from the internal man, and induce sicknesses on the mind, and at last pains." [4]

The signification of the physicians is preservation from evils, not dispensers of pharmaceuticals. "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual -- neither in nor of matter -- and the body will then utter no complaints," promised Mrs. Baker Eddy. [3]

Looking at the government health care plans from an unusual perspective, they appear to be really about propping up an over-extended Medical-Pharmaceutical (Med-Pharm) industry, and not being about the federal government "really caring" about its citizens. Does "Big Pharma" routinely lobby the Washington, DC government? And does it also, coincidentally, "real care" about ordinary citizens?

A downside of Americans rejecting the material medical model in favor of a more spiritual health approach would be a "crash" in the Med-Pharm industry. Med-Pharm needs an increase of or at least sustained illness to ensure profits and employment. The industry is paid in proportion to how many are sick, not in proportion to how many are well. But the alternative to a Med-Pharm "crash" is that, eventually, we all become doctors and nurses while at the same time we all become suffering patients -- that's where things are headed now!

(Caveat: The above is a layman's opinion.)
