(Melchizedek Communique, MC062109) It is not certain why so-called science looks askance on the historicity of giants. There were once giant reptiles, called dinosaurs. Why could there not have once been giant humans? In Genesis 6 Giants author Stephen Quayle offers an excellent comprehensive overview of this subject. (For further info, visit Quayle's web site, http://www.stevequayle.com/)
"There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that..." (Genesis 6: 4)
In the now recovered Book of Enoch, elaboration of provocative hints in Genesis 6:2 and 6:4 is furnished. The "Watchers" saw the daughters of men and mated with them. The Watchers disclosed "secret things" to their sons. (Enoch 10:7). Enoch has the giant offspring of the Watchers consuming "all the acquisitions of men. And when men could no longer sustain them, the giants turned against them and devoured mankind. And they began to sin against birds, and beast, and reptiles, and fish, and to devour one another's flesh, and drink the blood." (Enoch 7: 3-5) Eventually, Enoch has a vision ("walks with God," see Genesis 5:22), and is told by the Lord that "now, the giants, who are produced from the spirits and flesh, shall be called evil spirits upon the earth, and on the earth shall be their dwelling. Evil spirits have proceeded from their bodies; because they are born from men, and from the holy watchers is their beginning and primal origin; they shall be evil spirits upon the earth..." (Enoch 15: 8-9) There is "slaughter and destruction and death of the giants" but then from the souls of the giants' flesh the spirits go forth and apparently remain on earth as demons. (Enoch 16:1)
Mystic and theologian Emmanuel Swedenborg (1688 - 1772) offers further information on the giants, also known as the Nephilim. At the time of Enoch's writings, the demonic spirits of the giants had still remained. In that ancient time "they who were called 'Nephilim,' also 'Anakim' and 'Rephaim,' and were of the last posterity of the Most Ancient Church, were not yet shut up in hell, but wandered about and infused dire and deadly persuasions wherever they could, thus also into the evil in the church. This was the source of such falsity." (AC 7686)
What is called "the Lord" by Swedenborg seems to signify not only Jesus but also other presences of the deity -- in general, a Divine Presence on earth. This is apparent in the context of the passage in Exodus 10: 14, "...before them there were no such locusts as they, neither after them shall be such." Swedenborg explains the deeper meaning of the passage as "They who before the Lord's coming had been of the church and had been evil as to life, were in such falsity as had not been before, and shall not be afterward." (AC 7686)
"...before them there were no such locusts as they, neither after them shall be such." This plague of "locusts" is in the time frame of Moses and the "Pharaoh who knew not Joseph." The "locusts" signify the deadly, direful persuasions inflicted by the spirits of the giants.
Other hints on what became of "the locusts none such seen as they" (evil spirits of the giants) subsequent to the time of Enoch are elsewhere provided by Swedenborg:
The Nephilim had "conceived dreadful persuasions of their own greatness in comparison with others..." (AC 557) The "Nephilim are called 'mighty men' from the love of self..." (AC 583)
The baleful infestations of the giants, "which lived before the flood, is such that they so kill and suffocate all spirits by their most direful phantasies (which are poured forth by them as a poisonous and suffocating sphere) that the [other] spirits are entirely deprived of the power of thinking, and feel half dead..." (AC 581)
The "locusts" which "neither after them shall be such" signifies the evil spirits of the giants which no more can "rise up and infest the sphere of the world of spirits with the very direful poison of their persuasions." For, "it has been provided by the Lord that mankind should no longer become imbued with such dreadful phantasies and persuasions." (AC 581)
"These same Nephilim are at this day [circa 18th century] enclosed by their phantasies by what seems like a misty rock, out of which they are continually striving, but in vain, to rise up." (AC 1673)
But long ago, after the Flood, "they who were called 'Nephilim,' also 'Anakim' and 'Rephaim,' and were of the last posterity of the Most Ancient Church, were not yet shut up in hell, but wandered about and infused dire and deadly persuasions wherever they could..." (AC 7686) This was until the prophecy of "...before them there were no such locusts as they, neither after them shall be such."
"But there are other persuasions of falsity which take possession of the intellectual part only, and which arise from the principles of falsity that are confirmed in one's self." (AC 1673) The "locusts" none such seen as they, the "mighty men", are gone, yet relatively less extreme falsities remain. An "acceleration of lies" has been noticed recently. However, such a "plague of locusts" cannot ever be as bad as were those which "neither after them shall be such."
