Art Pepper: Gettin' Together

Art Pepper, in this classic 1960 recording, uses Miles Davis's rhythm section (Wynton Kelly
on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums) with trumpeter Conte Candoli on
four of the eight numbers. The set balances four standards with three originals.
Candoli is in fine form -- this recording is highly recommended!

Suprisingly, before this date Candoli led only two recordings as a leader.
This 1995 quartet recording (featuring mostly jazz standards) finds
Candoli in fine form, with Jan Lundgren (piano), Chuck Berghofer (bass),
and Joe La Barbera (drums). For those interested in Candoli's history,
the estensive liner notes (featuring some marvelous early photographs)
make this item worth seeking out.

Conte Candoli: Candoli Live
(Nagel-Heyer, 2002)
Released posthumously after Candoli's death in December of 2001, this
album, recorded in Germany in May, 2000, showcases Candoli at the end
of his career. It's hard to imagine that Candoli was 72 at the time
of this recording, which finds him playing bop over standard warhorses
with his big sound and introspective mute work.
