Horace Silver: The Jody Grind
(Blue Note, 1966)
One of Horace Silver's more underrated projects, this recording successfully blended Silver's trademark "funky jazz" hard-bop sound with the advanced front line of Woody Shaw (trumpet), James Spaulding (alto sax/flute), and Tyrone Washington (tenor sax). Larry Ridley (bass) and Roger Humpries (drums) round out the rhythm section with Silver (piano). An underrated classic, this album features all the elements that make Silver's best products shine.

Woody Shaw: Imagination
(Muse, 1987)
Shaw's last album as a leader (he died in 1989 and his health was failing at the time of this session), this recording features Steve Turre (trombone), Kirk Lightsey (piano), Ray Drummond (bass), and Carl Allen (drums) playing mostly standards.
