The Lone Star Scale
Raiders are a growing group
of Texas customizers and collectors of 1/6th scale figures and
vehicles. About every three months we meet in or near the DFW
area (that's Dallas/Ft. Worth to y'all non-Texans) to stage and
photograph different battle scenes from W.W.II, Korea, Vietnam,
and modern times.
So far, we've focused our energies on depicting
famous battle scenes from WW2. We'll wait three months or so
between setups so that those who attend have enough time to prepare
their forces and armored vehicles.
Who can be a LSSR member? Well, anyone
who attends. You don't have to be a Texan, but it sure saves
you some gas money in you live here. ;-) There is no membership
fee, you just have to show up and you're initiated. Any and all
1/6th scale stuff is welcome (Hasbro, SOTW, 21st Century, Custom)
except for Barbie. If anyone is interested
in knowing more about the LSSR, just e-mail me and I can add
you to the e-mail list I am now developing. ---Greg Brown

Large 1/6 armored
vehicles require even larger 1/6 structures around them to provide
accurate scale for outdoor photographic dioramas such as these.
Check out the fantastic hand-crafted bridge on the left and the
amazing camouflaged and weathered bunker on the right. The good
news is, once you build objects like these you can use them over
and over again in different battle scenes. Amazing work guys!

Another shot that
seems like it's straight out of a history book. This tank crew
seeks a moment's respite in a hand-crafted, 1/6 scale burnt-out
building, somewhere in France, 1944. Notice the branch in the
foreground. It is the perfect size for a 1/6th scale tree.

Interior shot (left)
of a Wehrmacht radioman frantically calling for reinforcements
(that will never come). And has the classic GIjOE Action Soldier
ever looked better than this? Out in the field where he belongs.
Check out the great shot of a patrol working their way carefully
through the French countryside. Go JOE!

This shot has a
cinematic quality. You can almost hear the squad leader in the
distance barking out orders while the medic in the foreground
tends to a wounded soldier, somewhere in Stalingrad.

These two shots
show how important the use of PERSPECTIVE is in a good outdoor
diorama shot. Notice how your eye starts in the foreground and
works its way toward the back. Cool!

It looks like Ivan's
about done "mopping up" this German squad. The battle
for Stalingrad will soon be over.

Great armored vehicles,
supporting structures and the effective use of perspective bring
these shots to life.

The addition of
a blown-out wall in the foreground frames this image in an interesting
and artistic way.

Again, Greg and
his buddies clearly demonstrate they understand how to frame
a scene. Look at how the water, disappearing far off into the
distance, closely resembles the Atlantic Ocean on DDay.

GREAT shot! Notice
how the use of small branches in the foreground actually look
like big trees at 1/6th scale. Great job, Greg. You can almost
hear the "Grrrrind" of treads in mud as this armored
beast digs its way into a turn. Look out for Patton, Fritz!

AMAZING. These shots
seem like they're from an actual battle. Greg, how did you guys
capture these poses so realistically? The guys on the right appear
to be in mid-fall and actually running to get off the beach.
WOW!

Take the time to
study these shots. They are well planned, laid out and posed.

These two shots
were taken indoors, but the dioramas are so HUGE that they could
have easily been outdoor setups. Look at the size of that British
glider on the left! WOW!

Two final shots
that demonstrate Greg's command of outdoor GIjOE photography.
Excellent!
