Greetings from the "Lost City!"

I 'm Joe Essid, probably better known to many of you on the internet as "AdvTeamMadman." I live in the Lost City of Central VA, and am a professor specializing in computers and writing, as well as a freelance writer, and all 'round geek.

I still build (rather well) 1/72 scale aircraft and 1/35 scale armor. I also enjoy shooting 1/1 firearms and engaging in 1/1 hiking and outdoor sports.

Along with Gary Braswell, one of my best (and certainly, oldest) friends, (shown at right in tiger stripe camo), I've collected GIjOEs since 1966, with a few hiatuses along the way for college and neglect. That's me on the right, preparing to disarm Gary with my amazing KUNG FU GRIP!

Anyway, it all began with just an Action Marine or Sailor (I forget). I lost most of my original military era Joes in a very unfortunate trade for a... cough... walkie talkie (I know, I know!). But I continued collecting during the original AT era (my greatest passion now) and still have quite a few original pieces from that period. Hoo-yeah!

In later years, I learned that my mother-in-law (an avid doll collector in her own right) had branched out to collecting GIjOE as well, and this re-ignited my own "addiction" yet again. I now consider my collection nearly done as I only buy about one or two additional figures a year, primarily focusing on the new Action Man sets or more vintage GijOEs and Major Matt Masons.

I never really got into Dragon or the other amazing new stuff, but I do have a few of the 21st Century sets and a lot of my own custom kitbashes.

I also obsessively "live" in the online virtual world known as "Second Life" and blog about it for our local newspaper. As a result, I'm planning to design a series of Adventure Team uniforms for use with SL avatars! :)

Finally, I've written an article about the GIjOE Sandbox newsgroup as well and its self-moderating, anarchic online community (if you are quoted, you already know this and have given your permission) which will appear soon (after the editors and publisher finish with it) as an anthology about style and communication online. Enjoy the pics.

Best from the Lost City!

Whoa! Killer photo composite of Joe's custom Saber pilot.

What's the rush? This group is jostling each other out of the way to see...SOMETHING! But what?

Ah! It's Joe's Man of Action who's just arrived with news from the fabled "Lost City" of Virginia.
He appears to have suffered an eye injury during his trip, but bravely "soldiers" on. GO JOE!

Another cool photo composite. What? You didn't know the Adventure Team had a B52 and a B2?

The desert exploring team takes a break in their nifty "Mummy Room." Check out the great poster on the wall!

Astronaut Joe in his jet pack prepares to lift off from a Major Matt space station. Nice 2001 album cover a backdrop.

Spy Joe checks out his new partner's undercover "equipment," while Paratrooper Joe "welcomes" a lovely French maid
on VE day, 1944. Ooh-la-LA! Liberation! Great pics, Joe! Thanks for sharing.
