When I got back into collecting a year or so ago, I promised myself that I would NOT let it get out of hand--this time. So I made up some rules (for me) to follow:

1. My hobby had to pay for itself (i.e. lots of work buying and parting out large lots and keeping ONLY the best items needed).

2. Collect only vintage (pre-1978).

3. No vehicles of any kind (they just require too much space).

4. Collect only high end and rare pieces (this made it all the more challenging and kept my collection size down).

5. Only display as many figures as physically possible while still looking like a "sane" person whenever company comes over (you should see some of the looks I used to get).

Finally, I decided my collection room should be in my finished basement, but it still lacked the space required for full-sized glass display cases or book shelves. I decided against the latter, as I wanted to keep my figures all dust free.

So...what I did was lay an 8-foot shelf across two 5-foot DVD cases that I had (see photo below), and that gave me the shelf space I was looking for. For my figures to remain dust free, I invested in ten really nice display cases from an online site for about $30 each. At first, I started with one boxed figure in each but as my collection grew I squeezed an additional figure into each case.

There are two figures missing from the pictures below that were taken out due to upgrading, and I have about six more boxed figures that I store in a Rubbermaid tub. I also have about a dozen joes and a ton of uniforms and gear in my "for sale" bins (some really nice stuff!).

I decided I've reached my limit and with the exception of some upgrading or completion of the figures you see here, I will be not be building my collection any larger than it is.

ONLY mint, vintage figures are allowed in Tom's collection. But wait...Isn't that a Captain Lazer in there, Tom? He's not a GIjOE. (But he's still cool!)

Tom's decision to use only top dollar, quality-built cases keeps every item mold and dust free. Fantastic!

This closeup reveals a minty, vintage Captain Action alongside a perfect vintage talking astronaut (WITH a rare red-top box).
