2. The Programming Models

I have selected four programming models to evaluate based on my own experience and interest. Section 2.1 is a discussion of my master's thesis. It introduces a structure for sample generation which is used throughout the paper. Section 2.2 presents Concurr ent Aggregates, the only actor-based language to address the conflict between hierarchical abstractions and parallelism. Section 2.3 demonstrates how Occam might be used to perform sampl e generation on Transputers. The simplicity and affordability of Transputers makes them an attractive platform for sound synthesis. Finally, Section 2.4 speculates on how my current work with the Connection Machine-2 could lead to efficient sample generation.
