Professor Clark Erickson and John Walker (Bill's brother) of the University of Pennsylvania are currently engaged in a study of raised field agriculture in tropical Bolivia. Surveying data were collected with a laser theodolite and stored in a data recorder for later transfer to a 486 personal computer. Using the Idrisi GIS and other software, they were able to construct a rectilinear grid of elevation data.
This data was then turned into a grey-scale intensity image, which was used to control the elevation of a surface in the Infini-D rendering package on the Macintosh. The resulting surface was combined with a horizontal plane representing water level.
